When his wife, daughter, and son-in-law die in a car crash, Gilbert, an elderly actor of moderate fame, strives to continue with life as normal, taking comfort in the routines of everyday life and the labours of his work, leaving the care of his orphaned grandson primarily to his housekeeper, but his grief and loneliness slowly begin to creep up on him, in de Oliveira’s gently humorous and quietly moving little film, filled with exquisitely expressive mise en scène and boasting an excellent central performance from Piccoli.
