For its first three quarters or so, Burton’s oft magical film – a visually inventive action-adventure re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s popular children’s books – is quite delightful, until a decidedly drawn-out battle sequence and its rather sentimental aftermath spoil things somewhat; that said, it’s still a cracking piece of brightly coloured entertainment.
