Chabrol’s well-made but risibly and fatally unconvincing film – based on the infamous 1906 White-Nesbit-Thaw crime passionnel – sees an attractive and increasingly successful young television personality, when dumped by her middle-aged, married author lover, marry an obnoxious and decidedly unstable upper-class gent, who struggles to come to terms with her past sexual encounters.
