In one of Sillitoe’s more light-hearted and purely enjoyable short stories, a teenage boy, who can’t wait to turn fifteen so that he can fly the coup, relates to us a cautionary tale about Jim Scarfedale, a wet blanket of a twenty-something factory worker, who struggled to leave behind the comfort of his mother’s home and, after the briefest of unhappy marriages, eventually went a little bit funny.
