A pair of crooked Englishmen disembark from a ship in a French port with a bag of ill-gotten money, but a pursuing policeman, a murderous fight or two, and a keen-eyed pointsman ensure that it was never going to be a case of living happily ever after, in Tarr’s exquisitely photographed, deliberately paced, and decidedly downbeat thriller, boasting a heartbreakingly beautiful performance from Szirtes.
