Kazan’s operatic, vaguely camp, and visually adventurous adaptation of Steinbeck’s novel paints a portrait of a family at the point of implosion, as the black sheep of the family (one of two brothers) learns that his mother is not dead (as his father said) but a brothel madam, becomes dangerously close to his brother’s fiancée, and tries to buy his father’s love with a spot of war profiteering.
