Baumbach’s oft painfully funny though occasionally merely painful but never less than thoroughly absorbing and acutely well observed film follows the misadventures of Roger – a 41-year-old failed musician turned carpenter, who has recently spent time in a psychiatric hospital – as he house-sits for his holidaying brother and family, fumblingly begins a sort-of relationship with his brother’s 25-year-old assistant, and generally alienates everyone around him.
