When her young son dies after falling out of a window, Betty Fisher, a wealthy author recently returned to Paris from New York, soon finds herself with another young boy to look after, when her rather unbalanced mother procures one from the streets of a poor neighbourhood, leaving his real mother not so much frantic as slightly peeved, in this mildly diverting if decidedly ludicrous adaptation of Ruth Rendell’s novel, The Tree of Hands (1984).
