Those not familiar with Jim Thompson’s 1952 novel may well find themselves struggling to understand the motivation of the central character in Winterbottom’s (rightly) sickeningly violent portrait of a meek small town deputy sheriff who commits a series of brutal murders, which, though generally well crafted, really struggles to get beneath the skin of its killer.
