When George Simmons, a once funny stand-up who’d sold out to make decidedly unfunny Hollywood movies, finds out that he has a life threatening illness, he undergoes a marked change of personality, taking an aspiring young comedian under his wing; but when an experimental drug brings favourable results, his old personality slowly begins to rear its ugly head, in Apatow’s well observed look at the humanity behind the comic façade of comedians old and new.
