Anticipating the 1988 visit of the Pope, the residents of the small Uruguayan village of Melo busily trade in their life savings for chorizo and other wares to sell to the anticipated large crowd, with one, Beto, a poor smuggler, taking a decidedly different tack – building a toilet, which he hopes to charge for the use of to passers-by, in Charlone and Fernández’s touching, Ealing-like comedy.
