This affecting, beautifully understated, and decidedly human final part of the prolific Yamada’s loose samurai trilogy follows the trials and tribulations of a recently blinded samurai – he lost his eyesight after being poisoned whilst working as a food tester for the local shogun – as he struggles, against all the odds, to maintain his honour and status.
