Filled with incidences of stomach churning brutality, scenes of lyrical beauty, and moments of pathos, Yang’s remarkable portrait of two people whose lives have been tainted by violence and tragedy, who have learned to deal with their pain and anger in markedly different ways, miraculously manages to create a portrait so human and so touching that we not only feel genuine empathy with a sickeningly violent debt collector but we also manage to feel real compassion towards him.
